RED RIBBON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

9TH SUFFOLK CADET SQUADRON HOSTS

RED RIBBON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

22 October 2024

Red Ribbon Week runs each year October 23 through October 31 to remember Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent, who was killed in Mexico 1985.  Wear a Red Ribbon to promote a drug-free message in honor of Kiki's battle against illegal drugs.

Our Red Ribbon Leadership Academy places high school aged cadet NCOs and Cadet officers in front of middle school students (non-cadets) to serve as role models and leadership educators during a 3-hour workshop.  The "Red Ribbon" symbolizes the Academy's role in promoting the drug-free ethic.

Program Goals

  • To equip middle school student leaders with a basic understanding of the art and science of leadership.
  • To promote the drug-free ethic among middle school student leaders by using CAP cadets as role models.
  • To provide a venue for cadet officers and NCOs  to apply their leadership skills.
  • To increase the Cadet Program's visibility in the community and boost cadet recruiting.

2023 Academy was partnered with the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office; the NY National Guard Counterdrug Task Force; Human Understanding & Growth Services (H.U.G.S), Inc; and the 106th Rescue Wing Air National Guard.  This year, we are excited to welcome these returning agencies and to add Riverhead CAP to the list of partners!

We encourage parental participation and invite our local community to attend.

We are hosting a Photo Contest as one activity to promote a drug-free lifestyle.  See our page to learn how to register for the contest and submit your photo under our 'Events/Activities' page.  Or you may use this link for your photo submission.

Results for the 2023 "Planting A Promise" Activity

This activity was designed to promote and be a reminder for a drug-free lifestyle.  Civil Air Patrol Cadets planted 200 red tulips.  In the Spring of 2024, the blooming of these bulbs will offer a pleasant view to the base personnel and remind all to remain drug-free!
